PMS & Pop Physique

BEING A GIRL IS HARD!

Because sometimes you just cry 3 TIMES A DAY for NO REASON other than maybe the fact that Noah wrote Allie 365 letters, but that one guy couldn't seem to be able to return my text.... oooor maybe someone asked me to move my yoga mat and it just really hurt my feelings!!!

Or maybe it was that you overheard a friend talking behind your back, your ex sent you cryptic messages on Facebook, and you got stood up for a coffee date. (In all fairness, I wasn't looking forward to it in the first place).

Theoretically speaking, there is someone in this world who would trade my "bad day" for their best day. I can't really complain.

I chose to blame it on hormones.

You know what helps people cheer up?

Chocolate cake, you say?

Well, yes.

But I'm tawkin' 'bout ENDORPHINS!

Today was cardio day. So I tried out this place in Silverlake called PopPhysique.
It's too trendy for life. I'm surprised they let me in.

First of all, let me say that I'm pretty sure all the women there were professional dancers.
It was like a SHARKNADO of pilates, ballet, and yoga.
We worked every part of the body!
I thought to myself, oh little tiny movements...TOO EASY!
Five flexes into it was like MY ARMS ARE ON FIRE!!!
No one else was screaming. Odd.

Everyone else could also do the splits in the air.

 Show offs.

Long story short, here is what I ate between sob-fests and booty pops and squats:

Who knew yoga could be stressful and irritating?

It's been a couple days since I uploaded my food journals so I will have to just put them all below.

I went to the gym twice today. Once, this morning I did Upper Body (which I will talk more about later).  Then again this afternoon. I told my roommate I would go to yoga with her. I thought it would be nice to stretch out my achy muscles and get all zenned out and centered or whatever.

NOPE!

I get in there and roll out my yoga mat. Get all situated in a nice sitting position. Ready to start focusing on my breath. Ready to have the lights dimmed. Ready to listen to some Enya or Indian namaste tunes.

NOPE!

First of all, it was not Bikram or hot yoga...but it was hot - because our ghetto gym does not seem to have A/C just some extremely dirty fans that remained turned off.

The lady walks in and puts on some Santana and is like EVERYBODY STAND UP! Homegirl had the most irritating voice. She did not once talk about breathing. She talked the entire time and went light speed through all the moves. I heard lots of grunting and groaning and possibly some whispered cuss words.

As I was downward dogging I saw two girls behind me giving this lady some major shade.

I think we were all giving her shade

Note to self: Next time, only take yoga with Larry. He reads us tweets from the Dalai Lama!

Real Talk...

... Hot Dogs are my favorite food.

The last 4 days have been extremely challenging with the whole day camp going on.
I have been tempted with pizza, bagels, artichoke dip, cookies, teddy grahams, chocolate cake, soda, and HOT DOGS.

I brought my lunch along most days. Today was the final day and there was a luncheon arranged for the parents. I figured, okay,  grown up food will be there....right?

NO!

They had hot dogs and chips and cake! One of my students is a gluten free vegetarian so she and I snacked on celery sticks, baby carrots, and baby broccoli watching others in envy.

When I got home - there was a block party happening outside my apartment ...serving up more HOT DOGS.

Despite all the will power, I'm not confident that  I have been making the best choices in my diet for the past few days.

I haven't been hungry so much as I have been really thirsty.

Here is what my food journal looks like for today:

2 pills with water @8:30am

Breakfast@9am

  • one boiled egg
  • 3 apple slices
  • glass of water
Snack @ 11:45am

  • 4 celery sticks, 4 baby carrots, 3 cherry tomatoes, and 2 baby broccoli
2 pills @1pm

LUNCH @1:30pm
  • 3 oz chicken, 1/2 cup brown rice, over spring salad mix, drizzled some mustard on top of that
  • giant glass of water
GYM @3:30 Most difficult work out yet
I tried 12lbs and 10lbs on the dumbbell exercises, but could barely lift them. 8lbs was doable, but still extremely challenging. Lots of mental "you can do this" over and over.  I definitely want to improve in this area.
  • 8 min on treadmill at 3.5
  • 3 sets of 30 crunches
  • 3 sets of 30 bicycles
  • 2 sets of 25 leg lifts (challenging! definitely want to improve)
  •  Overhead shoulder press: 1 set of 15 @10lbs, 3 sets of 15 @8lbs
  • Dumbbell front raise: 4 sets of 15 @8lbs
  • Rear Delt Fly Machine: 4 sets of 15 @ 30lbs
  • Standing Bicep Curls: 4 sets of 15 @8lbs
  • Tricep Rope Pulldown: 0 - last work out and the rope was not attached to the machine...I was already very tired and frustrated with myself so I decided to try this one first next time when I'm fresh.
Post Work Out Snack @5pm
  • Bottle of water
  • Power Bar*
5:30 had a piece of grilled chicken from the Block Party and a Bottle of water

Glass of water @7pm & 11pm

* Need to find out the nutrition facts about "protein bars" and if they are even good for me. If so, which brands are healthy and which are glorified candy bars.  Also, I need to look into the same thing about protein drinks.

Artichoke dip is not hummus

Today was my 3rd day at the kid's day camp. We had double sessions. So double physical activity game time, double song/dance time, double story time, double craft time, double chasing the 5th & 6th grade boys around making sure they don't set something on fire.

I am mentally and physically exhausted.

  • 2egg whites +1 whole egg scrambled w/ pico de gallo & spinach (did not taste as good as I hoped)

  • 1oz. honey mustard dressing on the side
  • glass of water
Snack @ 4pm (attended going away party)
  • Glass of water
  •  4 or 5 carrot & celery sticks
  • big bite of artichoke dip... turns out artichoke dip is NOT "pretty much the same thing as hummus" and is actually not good for you. (i.e. mayo & cream cheese) lesson learned
2 pills w/ water @4:45

Dinner @5:15
  • "Taco Salad" Approx. 2-3 oz marinated/grilled chicken, lettuce, tomatoes, guac, chopped onions
  • Basically instead of eating two mini tacos in those icky corn tortillas I opted to just take the same amount of filling and eat it salad style... but with more lettuce.
  • Glass of water
Got home around 7pm and had 2 more glasses of water before bed.
Stared at the sealing for about 2 hours and decided I should go to the gym.
Took me 30 minutes to drive half a mile... my gym is about 3-5 miles away.
Went home :(

Tomorrow is supposed to be my rest day, but I guess I will just swap. I hope that doesn't throw things off.

Saturday, August 17, 2013

So where's my letter from Hogwarts?

Woke up around 8am feeling like all the snot in my nose decided to make a home in my sinus cavity. I figured if I blew my nose the pressure would be relieved and I could go about my day....NOPE.

When that didnt work I tried using a Neti pot and taking a long hot shower. Maybe I could get to the gym by 10am???  NOPE

FULL BLOWN MIGRAINE!!!!

I curled up in my bed and wished for death... finally around 12:30 pm, my roomie agreed that we both needed massages. And that did the trick. In my mind, if my ailment can't be cured by a nap, Nyquil, a hot shower, fresh pressed juice, a brisk walk/dancing, yoga, or a massage THEN I most likely have a rare and fatal disease and should say goodbye to all my loved ones cuz it's over.

(Note: my dad's cure-all is gargling warm salt water)

I was probably dehydrated or something because later that night I realized my nose had been bleeding. EW!

Today my diet was a bit thrown off because due to extra sleeping and nausea/pain, I had lack of appetite. But I'm gonna be back on the wagon tomorrow fur shure.

I probably have my portions wrong or I'm not eating enough carbs??

Besties and Ballet

My BFF has been home for the summah, summah, summah tiiiime from law school. That is sadly coming to an end. Today we decided celebrate the end of summer by being cultural and fancy and check out The Getty!

The parking lot was full so they turned us away and told us maybe come back in an hour.

UGH, AS IF!!!

We did what we do best. GO SHOPPING!  I got a cute little candle from Kitson and some eye brightner from Sephora. She got some white jeans ON SALE FOR $29.99 from Free People and sunglasses... Let's note that everything in Free People is a million bajillion dollars so she SCORED!

GYM

Up to this point, I have only done the cardio machines and the classes at my gym. Today, I started out at the machines that were female friendly. However, by the last four exercise I had to cross into the land of meat heads.

It must be how Frodo felt going into Mordor.

BIG muscly men all sweaty. Grunting and lifting ginormous weights. It was very intimidating, to say the least. At one point, we had to ask one of the gym employees to point us to the right direction and how to use one of these mystery machines. We made it a game to do southern belle accents as our arms were shaking.

"My ahms are simply quiverin' Mistah Delfleur!"

...Followed by giggles, of course. Not sure if the manly men appreciated us in their zone.
OR did they???

FOOD

Note: Drinking at least 10 glasses of water a day = Rebekah peeing every 30 minutes.

Also, just because food is "healthy", does not mean it has to be bland.

Exhibit A

Never Forget

Let's be honest. I have never been athletic. I played soccer until the fifth grade and maybe some t-ball. However, that mostly consisted of me sitting on the field picking flowers to make some sort of daisy chain. I took dance lessons most of my life and dabbled in cheerleading.

 Does that count?

I've never considered myself to be "fit" or "thin" ... There was a time after college when I was too poor to buy food and worked a retail job where I ran around like a chicken with my head cut off. In addition, being 23, I went dancing religiously. (I am a danger to myself and others on the dance floor). I was probably close to 130 lb. here.

Since then, I've probably gained a solid 15-20lbs. People warned me about turning 25 and how your metabolism goes out the window. I think the weight snuck up on me as a result of working at a soul-sucking job where I sat on my butt for 8 hours a day. Also, my best friend/partner in crime/dance-soulmate moved to San Francisco.

This year I made a New Year's Resolution to take everything to the next level in my life. Spiritual, Career, and Fitness. This blog is focusing on the fitness aspect. I began the year by purchasing a gym membership. That hasn't been quite enough so as of this week I am trying out a new fitness program to kick it into high gear and to have accountability.

I plan on recording a food journal, work outs, pictures, motivational quotes and memes, and of course humor.
